Outlook 2016 opening issue solved.

Today is Monday, and as Monday’s go, it always starts with some unexpected issue. Today Outlook 2016 would not open and I got a series of the following windows pop open.

“Microsoft Outlook
Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper Server and mailbox name. The Microsoft Exchange information service in your profile is missing required information. Modify your profile to ensure that you are using the correct Microsoft Exchange information service.”
*

*“Microsoft Outlook
*System resources are critically low. Close some windows. ”

*“Microsoft Outlook
Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook, Cannot open the Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The information Store could not be opened.”

And then Outlook 2016 closes.

So if you search the web on how to fix this, you will get a link to How to find and run the Inbox Repair tool in Outlook which then tells you to download a tool which you do and then run the tool which you do and then it makes a copy of your ost file and then says this

Which then leads you to believe that Outlook is now working, but when you attempt to open Outlook again you are prompted with the same error windows as before.

So you can whip out a number of application monitoring tools and go through each file that is accessed and then move them around to see what breaks or what doesn’t to fix the Outlook 2016 opening error. However I have once again selfishly gone ahead and saved you the time.

Open your profile directory location like so

C:Users{Username}AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook16

Change {username} to the name of your profile on the PC you are using.

Now locate the following file “AutoD.{youremailaddress}.xml”

Cut the file and paste it to a temp location.

Open Outlook and I bet you it works!

Let me know.

Update!  Turns out there is another workaround.

Open Control Panel

  1. Type Mail and open Mail
  2. Click Show Profiles….
  3. Change “Always Use This Profile” to “Prompt for a profile to be used”
  4. Yep that’s it
